Chennai loves its biryani, and when it comes to the city’s most popular biryani kadai (shop), many point in the direction of Yaa Mohaideen, an enterprise that first came to life in a push cart nearly 30 years ago. Now with branches and restaurants across the city, old timers still prefer to visit its first outlet in Pallavaram, in the southern part of the city, where it is de rigueur to queue for and taste the biryani, whilst standing! We tasted both versions of the Yaa Mohaideen biryani, chicken and mutton, and also a couple of popular sides.
