Wrestlers can go from gimmick to gimmick never reaching their potential. Just like both the Undertaker and Kevin Nash, they went through a number of awful characters until they hit big.

Unfortunately, for some, their change in gimmick pretty much destroyed their career and most were hanging on by a thread.
