This video for the 2007 Volvo S60 will help diagnose and repair issues related to the interlock mechanism which releases the ignition key when the vehicle is turned off as well as the transmission shifter interlock. The ignition/transmission interlock performs two functions. The first prevents the transmission from being shifted without the key inserted in the ignition lock cylinder and turned to the proper position. The secondary function of the interlock is to prevent the key from being released until the transmission has been set to the park position.

If the cable has failed or come out of adjustment for any reason you may experience any of the following symptoms:

Transmission selector lever can be moved into any position with the vehicle on or off but the key can not be removed. Cable seizure within the sheath or at the transmision end which jams the shifter interlock open will produce this condition. An unsecured cable at the shifter end will produce this condition.

The key can be inserted and removed but the transmission selector lever can not be shifted into gear from park. Cable seizure within the sheath or at the ignition switch end of the interlock which jams the shifter interlock closed will produce this condition. Cable breakage may also result in this condition. A disconnected interlock cable at the switch end will produce this condition.

Corrective actions:

Check both ends of the cable to ensure it is securely attached.

Disconnect both ends and move the cable at each end while checking for normal movement. If there is a significant amount of drag attempt to lubricate the cable. Keep in mind that the shifter end of the cable is spring loaded to pull the cable towards that end. Replace cable if necessary and ensure proper routing to prevent interference with other systems.

Check the gear selector lock linkage for smooth movement Clean or lubricate if necessary. Replace or repair linkage if it is worn out or damaged.

Check the ignition lock cylinder to ensure it is mated properly when the cable is attached to the housing. Replace any broken or worn out components found here.

Most of the time this system will fail if beverages are spilled on the shifter housing and can be remedied by cleaning/lubricating the linkage and pushrod at the shifter end of the cable.

If inspection of the cable reveals no problems and your transmission won't shift out of park, be sure to check the transmission/brake pedal interlock for proper operation.
