It is fairly simple to replace household lighting fixtures. This video demonstrates how to remove the existing lighting fixture and replace it with a completely new unit. The process is fairly straight forward and a very doable "do it yourself" (DIY) effort.

First off the light switch should be turned off and the breaker for the circuit the fixture is on should be turned off. This is to avoid being electrocuted. Next the old light fixture should be removed. Usually there are a couple of screws that will hold on the light fixture finish trim, and then a couple more screws that hold the light fixture framing to the ceiling or wall. Then the old electrical connections can be released by unscrewing the wire nuts. Once the wires are exposed I like to double check the wires with a voltmeter to make sure they are not live wires. Then the new fixture frame and wires can be attached. Usually the house wires will include a white wire (neutral), a bare copper wire (ground), and a black or red wire (power wire). These wires are to be attached with wire nuts to the light fixture wires. Finally the fixture can be mounted to the wall or ceiling and the light bulb or light bulbs installed.
