Blooming coffee is an often overlooked step in brewing. In fact, blooming can be the difference between a good cup of coffee and a great cup of coffee.

Blooming is also a litmus test for fresh coffee and stale coffee. Generally, fresh coffee will bloom much more and expel a lot more foam than stale or older coffee.

For best results, use freshly roasted, freshly ground coffee.

The bloom is nothing more than the trapped carbon dioxide in the coffee grounds being released very fast as hot water interacts with the coffee grounds.

By blooming, you allow the CO2 to escape, then pour the rest of your water in, which results in the water being able to better interact with the grounds.
