The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge’s eastern span replacement is one of the largest and most ambitious bridge projects of the 21st century. Following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, which caused a partial collapse of the original eastern span, engineers undertook a seismic upgrade to ensure the bridge could withstand future earthquakes. The replacement, completed in 2013, features a unique self-anchored suspension design, using a single tower and innovative construction techniques to handle the varying soil conditions between Oakland and Yerba Buena Island. However, the project was not without controversy, facing issues like alleged faulty welds, foundation concerns, and bolt failures, along with massive cost overruns from $250 million to $6.5 billion. Despite these challenges, the new span is a monumental engineering achievement, offering improved safety and functionality for one of California’s most critical transportation links.
