Un-edited video of R&D printing session of a 4 color CMYK direct to plate photopolymer gravure to test the studio's new Piezography custom color gravure profiling system.

The photopolymer plates were imaged directly on an EPSON Pro 9900 printer using Piezography UltraHD Matte Black ink via a proprietary printer driver that dithers the image as if with aquatint. No screening or film were required. After printing, the plates are exposed directly to UV and then processed. The separations of the color image were devised using an R&D version of an in-house ICC profiling application. The finished print is designed to match the image on a calibrated computer display.

Oil based process color inks were used to ink the plates prior to printing on an Ettan etching press. A magnetic base is being tried to aid in registration via a steel square which is weighted to the press to prevent movement. Today we are testing the effect of using waterleaf and non-waterleaf papers in regards to quality, definition and registration.
