Protesters in Tel Aviv on Saturday (August 31) called on the Israeli government to do more to secure the release of hostages still held in Gaza and expressed dismay in negotiations that have so far failed to end the fighting.

Key sticking points in ongoing talks mediated by the United States, Egypt and Qatar include an Israeli presence in the so-called Philadelphi Corridor, a narrow 14.5-km-long (9-mile-long) stretch of land along Gaza's southern border with Egypt.

Protesters expressed frustration with that approach and accused Netanyahu's government of prioritising it over the lives of hostages.
Netanyahu has maintained throughout the war that securing the release of the hostages is a top priority for his government.

Hamas-led gunmen killed some 1,200 Israelis and foreigners and abducted around 250 hostages on October 7, according to Israeli tallies. Since then, Israel's military has levelled Gaza, driving nearly all of its inhabitants from their homes and killing at least 40,000, according to Palestinian health authorities. Israel says it has killed some 17,000 militants.
