The Big Kahuna (1999) Character Speech
This scene identifies two distinct movements that lead to philosophical insight: the movement inward, which gives awareness of the thing-in-itself as Will , and the move outward to the realm of Ideas, which reveals the world's nature beyond the distorting lens of one's own subjectivity.

-The Scene captures the essence of "The World as Will and Representation" by Arthur Schopenhauer.(Character and Honesty within the world )

-Phil tells Bob he believes he is an honest man .. There is a part of him deep down that strives to be honest .

-The nature of will appears in the very core of an idea. Will precipitates a position that characterizes the inner aspect of things, as far as we can describe it.(objective perspective). The world as Will “for us”, as A.S. sometimes qualifies it, is the world as it is in itself, a unity.the world's nature beyond the distorting lens of one's own subjectivity. The world as a representation is the world of diverse appearances of our ideas .(the world which we perceive and are perceived )

-Phil then asks Bob to question/anaylze the nature and impact of the honesty in his life up until this point .Does he accept information as it is or as he wants it to be and how has this perception impacted the whole of his life ?
-Phil then suggest to Bob when he lays his hands on a conversation to "steer it" he pushes false appearances in hopes to unjustly gain affirmation via consumption. He alters truth as a form of self promotion where as an artistic expression incites creativity and the formation of individual truth and ideas .That makes Bob just a spreader of external opinion /gossip that hopes to have others agree with him and gain profit/confirmation .He is just a marketing rep that sells lies for profit .. Phil emphasizes it doesn't matter what he tries to push on people Himself , Jesus , Industrial lubricant , Its all the same. Its not a genuine human interaction as all honesty ,choice ,creativity, etc is Stripped away from the receiver .(Phil started the convo and doesn't tell Bob what to think ,he presents reasoning and logic that is open to interpretation and discourse )

Phil then expresses to Bob If you wanna be genuine and connect as a human being " ask him about his kids, find out what his dreams are" -for no other reason , just to find out ..
To be genuine , a person must be willing to unite passively to the world of possible non acceptance by receiving and exposing unique objective character (interior true self ).If a person can't do that then they are just reflecting others for sales (of personal image etc).

Bob respectfully disagrees.
Phil accepts his disagreement and moves on .. ( he is not pushing a sale , just presenting an idea and realizing there is no more room for talk/exchange )

Only by confronting and accepting that which is seen as disagreeable /unacceptable (Regret ,pain despair fear death nothingness etc )does one grow thus leading to an exposure of a more true self..)The more true we are to the self the more honesty will pour out from the windows of the soul and" tattoo itself "onto the external expression , giving us what can be seen as character.
-(personality vs character -internal vs external ).
Bob asks to leave ,Phil says go ahead
-Schopenhauer argues to have original ,extra ordinary or perhaps even immortal idea one has but to separate / isolate one self from the world for only but a moment ,so that commonplace happenings reveal their true essence .
-Observing Bob's reaction after the speech Phil sighs assuming the idea hasn't been picked up and there has been a failure to communicate.
-On Bobs way out ---A pause ...
He exits the darkness ,opens the door following the way to the movement inward, and shining new light on objective perspective & subjective expression balance within and around( awareness&acceptance of the thing-in-itself & of the self )...
-Phil says Goodnight ,Nietzsche declared: “God is Dead” (Gott ist tot, )proclaiming Philosophical enlightenment is so powerful in truth it had laid god to rest thus "killed" the need for god/religion.
Not long after Phil also exits the scene following the movement outward shining a new light on his own perspectives further reaching outward into the realm of ideas.
The job of art is the expression of the essence of ideas . A.S thought music was one of the highest and purest forms of artistic communication and musicians carried a great responsibility to their art .
Finally "The Sunscreen Song " starts to play
