My Xi5 Motorguide Trolling Motor has been giving me trouble for a couple of years. The main problem is that when motoring down the lake, the motor will stop driving, the motor will turn off. The GPS module will still try to steer, but there is no propulsion power Trying to restart the motor with the wireless controls doesn't work, I must disconnect the power at the plug for a few seconds and reconnect. Sometimes it will drop out again in a few minutes and sometimes it will run normally for hours.
Most of the logic for the Xi5 is in the motor control board, so I decided to try replacing the board. I purchased a new board, then I learned that heat sink compound and silicone dielectric compound is required to make this change.
I will show how I replaced my control board and got my motor back on the water. The fix so far is successful.
