After boondocking on the Snake River for 3 weeks near Alpine, Wyoming / Palisades, Idaho and not needing to pull out the generator once, we thought it was time to do a one-year review of our solar setup (or solar system as Damien likes to call it 🤣).

The solar components for our Grand Design Imagine 2800bh were purchased through RV Solar Electric and installed by D&R's Family RV (both in Arizona). Our SOK lithium batteries were purchased through RV Solar Concepts. Every company that we worked with did a fantastic job and made the installation process seamless.

We typically boondock 2-3 weeks out of the month and have been doing this for the past year and a half. Throughout this time, we've learned that this setup is ideal for our needs:

5- Go Power GP-190M panels (190 watt 9.33A 27" X 60" each)
Victron Energy 150/70 controller (70A capacity with Bluetooth monitoring)
80A DC Breaker
Victron Energy Multiplus 12/3000/120 inverter /charger (3000 watt pure sine wave with 120 amp high output battery charger)
Victron Energy VE Bus Smart dongle
400A catastrophe fuse/block
DC Disconnect switch

The 3000 watt inverter has been capable of running all the loads in our RV, with the exception of the 2nd AC. This system also has a high output battery charger (up to 120A) built in so that we can charge batteries quickly from an outside source (Generator) during long periods of inclement weather or when parked under trees.

This was not a cheap upgrade, but saving approximately $50 per night by not needing hookups, the solar setup has more than paid for itself over the past year and a half. We would definitely recommend having solar installed if you're a fulltime RVer or primarily boondock. We would do it again in a heartbeat just for the security that comes with knowing we can have long-term electricity anywhere we decide to pull our home over…and we can run the Keurig of course!
