In this Conversation About, psychologists Claudia Longhi and Flávia Amoroso discuss the Polyvagal Theory and its applicability in psychotherapeutic care. In the first episode, they discuss what the Polyvagal Theory is.

This theory emerged in 1994, created by Stephen Porges, who studied the biological development of living beings, including humans, and how they function, considering the evolution of the brain in reptiles, mammals, and us humans, mammals.

One of the nerves in our brain is called the vagus nerve, and it branches out into two pathways, carrying information from the brain to the body, and from the body to the brain.

The body records, feels, and maintains all the non-conscious information that the brain captures, whether you are safe or in danger.

And the polyvagal theory explains how our autonomic nervous system works and how much this influences people's daily behavior.
