Join my friends and me as we attempt to summit Mount Marcy, the highest peak in New York State at 5,343 feet elevation. The trail is approximately 16 miles round-trip from the Adirondack Loj to the summit. I dropped my glasses about a third of the way on the approach and backtracked about a half mile but never found them. My Strava recorded 17.72 miles and 3,718 ft. elevation gain with a moving time of 8H 30M.

We stayed at the Adirondack Loj and had breakfast there before venturing out. The trail, and from what I can tell, most Adirondack Mountian peak trails start out with a kind, dirt trail and gentle assent before turning to a rocky stream bed-like trail. The rocky terrain continues with occasional lovely, pavement-like granite bedrock until the peak where the granite bedrock takes over and vegetation turns alpine.

While the trail was challenging for our group, we ranged in age from 60 to 75. Few people were attempting the same summit as a day trip and those that did started early. The return trip is challenging for knees at this age and at times, the going was quite slow.

Our summit view was a bit hazy, but we could see the surrounding mountains easily. Bugs and flies were at the summit. Before heading back, I sat down for a bite on the wayward side of the mountain to eat a snack. My hiking companion and I would have liked to stay longer, but we did not know how long it would take us to get down the mountain. By the end, I was ready for a shower, dinner, and a good night's sleep.
