In today’s episode of the Expert Series, we convene three experts for the first part of a two-part series on Canada’s submarine fleet replacement of the Victoria-class submarines. Part One focuses on the geopolitical context of the submarine fleet replacement, naval strategy, and outlining the technological and capability requirements needed to meet Canada’s defence needs. Part Two will focus on the procurement of these new submarines, the impact of the changing nature of undersea warfare on design consideration, and recruitment and retention issues in the Navy.

VAdm (Ret’d) Mark Norman, former Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, VAdm (Ret’d) Bob Davidson, a member of the CDAI Board, and RAdm (Ret’d) Luc Cassivi, former Commander of Military Personnel Generation and the Canadian Defence Academy, join us to discuss the importance of submarines to Canada’s security and defence environment.

With increasing global activity in the Arctic and threats from nations like Russia and China, guests highlighted the need for a modernized submarine fleet to ensure effective underwater surveillance and deterrence, especially given Canada’s extensive coastline.
