The Taj Mahal is a white marble mausoleum built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in Agra between 1631 and 1648 AD in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.
It is located in the Agra District of Uttar Pradesh on the right bank of the Yamuna River in a vast 17 hectare Mughal Garden. The four arches on the sides of the Taj are framed by verses from the Qur'an. The size of the sentences on the walls increases from bottom to top, but when viewed from the floor it appears to be a uniform size.

1631 നും 1648 നും ഇടയിൽ ആഗ്രയിൽ മുഗൾ ചക്രവർത്തി ഷാജഹാൻ തന്റെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട ഭാര്യ മുംതാസ് മഹലിന്റെ സ്മരണയ്ക്കായി വെളുത്ത മാർബിളിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ച ഒരു ശവകുടീരമാണ് താജ് മഹൽ. ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും മനോഹരവും സംരക്ഷിതവും വാസ്തുശാസ്ത്രപരവുമായ ശവകുടീരമാണ് ഇത്. താജ് മഹൽ പണിയാൻ 20000 ൽ അധികം ആളുകൾ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. അസംസ്കൃത വസ്തുക്കൾ കൊണ്ടുപോകാൻ ആയിരത്തോളം ആനകളാണ് സഹായിച്ചത്. താജിന്റെ വശങ്ങളിലുള്ള നാല് കമാന ഭാഗങ്ങൾ ഖുറാനിലെ വാക്യങ്ങളാൽ രൂപപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ചുവരുകളിലെ വാക്യങ്ങളുടെ വലുപ്പം ചുവടെ നിന്ന് മുകളിലേക്ക് വർദ്ധിക്കുന്നു, പക്ഷേ നിലത്തു നിന്ന് നോക്കുമ്പോൾ ഒരു ഏകീകൃത വലുപ്പം ആയിട്ടാണ് കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്.
ഇന്ത്യയിലെ മുഗൾ സംസ്കാരത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീകമായ താജ് മഹലിനെ 1983 ൽ യുനെസ്കോയുടെ ലോക പൈതൃക സ്ഥലം ആയി അംഗീകരിച്ചു.
ഏഴു ലോകാത്ഭുതങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായ താജ് മഹൽ പ്രതിവർഷം 7–8 ദശലക്ഷം സന്ദർശകരെ ആകർഷിക്കുന്നു.
