Ah dear. Most upsetting. Terrible tragedy. Season 5 of The Crown is a letdown. On the plus side, it gave me a good excuse to watch Tobias Menzies have an existential crisis again. Doesn’t get old. Unlike the queen, who apparently ages herself out of relevancy between 1990 and 1991. But check out the storytelling techniques employed in seasons 1 through 4! Hero’s Journey! Archetypes! Self v Shadow! Who knows, maybe they’ll make a triumphant return in season 6.
Or maybe the show once had meaning but over the years has lost its sway and romance, refusing to retire and spending hundreds of millions of pounds as it fizzles into irrelevance…
