Liam Kelly, M.A. candidate from University of Burgundy currently works for 'Wines of Germany'. Learn about his findings:

"Sensory language is how we describe how we perceive the world through sensory input. This applies to wine when describing color, taste, and smell. While color is one of the easiest sensations to convey, as we have a near infinite amount of color words, think of wine being red, crimson, burgundy, scarlet, poppy etc., we have far fewer concrete words to discuss taste and smell.

This means we often end up using associative communication strategies such as describing the taste of wine, with words like chocolate, minerally, earthy, nuts, red fruit. These words are all polysemantic and can seem daunting and foreign for anyone who is unfamiliar with them.

To remedy this, The German Wine Institute https://winesofgermany.com has created multiple products to make wine more approachable for a general audience, these include the Aroma Wheels for German Wines https://shop.deutscheweine.de/index.p... , and our free monthly German wine seminars. The Aroma wheels are designed to help provide a reference and a broad array of terms to allow people to be more precise and varied in their discourse."
