High marshes are found in relatively cold and high elevation areas such as plateaus, and are known as a “treasure house of nature” where valuable vegetation grows. In autumn, the plants in the marshlands turn yellowish-brown, or “grass autumn leaves” (kusa momiji), which can be seen a little earlier than the autumn leaves of trees. The view of the high-altitude marshlands with the surrounding famous peaks is also wonderful, and the colorful grass autumn leaves are one of the poems that herald the “arrival of autumn”.
