This week, Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa discuss the ways in which work is
harmful to Black women, how data is rarely collected on marginalized
people, and how these realities are symptoms of a larger sickness in society.

Word of the Week [1:10]: Tone Policing: If you've ever been "checked" about
the way you said something rather than the content of what you said...you
may have been tone policed. This is a diversion tactic and often used to
silence folks who are most marginalized in the workplace.

Phase 1 [5:50]: Black Woman Employee Lifecycle: Although Black women
have been feeling the pressure at "work" for centuries, a recent visual
depicted some of their lived experiences and it has broken LinkedIn! Dr.
Shaunna and Dr. Lisa review the visual and share their analysis.

Phase 2 [19:00]: Society as a Patient: As Dr. Shaunna was reviewing some
research on underserved communities, she came across this concept which
reframes how we view the coping and resilience of individuals in a sick
society. Dr. Lisa compares and contrasts the idea with the social model of
disability.

Phase 3 [29:00]: Census Bureau Testing LGBTQIA+ Items: Shockingly (yet
not) the U.S. Census’ American Community Survey (ACS) has not included
questions about LGBTQIA+ communities in the past. Although the larger
Census is conducted every ten years, the ACS is administered yearly. It
gathers more detailed information on our communities than the Census. The
data scientists at the Census are currently testing questions on sexual
orientation for inclusion in the 2026 ACS. A long overdue inclusion to help us
better understand the diversity of people who live in communities across the
U.S
