My Whirlpool refrigerator was stuck running constantly "on" and froze everything. I was able to get it freed up and working normally while I ordered a new thermostat. Before I could get the new one installed, it stuck "off" and I lost everything in the refrigerator and freezer.
I cleaned out the refrigerator and now am installing the new thermostat. NOTE: High Voltage: this requires disconnecting power by either unplugging the refrigerator or turning off the correct circuit breaker or fuse at the main electrical panel.
This Whirlpool is a 2000 or 2001 model and has the thermostat installed up on top in the refrigeration compartment. It is necessary to remove the knobs, front panel and control box to remove the part. Additional care is required to disconnect the linkage for the freezer damper and also to not remove the screws holding the defrost thermostat in place.
