The Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 marked the largest seaborne invasion in military history.

The operation came at a crucial moment during The Second World War, as Hitler’s Nazi forces had taken most of Europe and fears of an attack on Great Britain were mounting.

‘Operation Overlord’ would see 50,000 vehicles, 11,000 aircraft, 5,000 ships and 150,000 Allied troops storm the shores of occupied France with the goal of breaking through Hitler’s Fortress Europe.

Military officials expected the causality rate to reach 75 per cent – a number that would be considered inconceivable by today’s standards.
