If England win Euro 2024, Gareth Southgate will statistically be England's best-ever manager. Sir Alf Ramsey, who won the 1966 World Cup and was manager for 11 years, only had eight. All that is missing from Southgate's claim is a major trophy. If the England team fails in the final again, he is likely to be replaced. But, despite his impressive record, he has to go even if England beat Spain to claim their first-ever Euro title. Because England's impressive talent pool deserves a head coach who is better suited to attacking football. Southgate's penalty miss sent England out in the semifinals of Euro 96 against Germany. So, winning the Euro in Germany would be a remarkable redemption arc for him. It would be a good way to end his stint as England manager and make way for a coach who is more suited to his gifted and ever loyal wards.
