I have been fighting using "old" methods but have been working with my mare trying to get a head set and trying to get a collected canter, correct leads, for much too long a time, it seemed. So I broke down and used a German Martingale. I was very pleased with this first ride. When I rode her, after this first at liberty run, her canter depart was easier, she was not as rushy, her trot was softer, she seemed less concerned - it was a very good experience for both of us.
