Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Southeast Asia Regional Office shares the perspective of local communities in the Kendeng Mountains on the island of Java, Indonesia. They have been struggling to defend their agricultural land from the threat of expansion of the cement industry for the last 17 years.
The cement industry is planning to take over agricultural land owned by residents for the location to build a cement plant. They will mine limestone from the Karst mountains, which have provided fresh water for the surrounding community for the ecosystem and the livelihood of the local residents. Kendeng residents opposed the plan to establish a cement factory by continuing to farm the land to fight the stigma that the Kendeng Mountains were barren and unproductive land. Farming for Kendeng residents is a cultural identity they will continue to maintain for the next generations.
