Elvis Rodriguez overcame a slow start on Saturday night, securing a knockout victory against an undefeated Olympian in his comeback from his initial professional defeat. Initially, Mexico's Juan Pablo Romero out-boxed Rodriguez in the first three rounds. However, Rodriguez turned the tables by knocking Romero down in both the fourth and fifth rounds. The scheduled 10-round welterweight bout at MGM Grand Garden Arena was ultimately halted as Rodriguez landed a counter left hand, causing Romero to fall flat on his back late in the fifth round.

Although Romero attempted to rise after reaching a sitting position, he couldn't beat the referee's count of 10, resulting in Rodriguez's triumph in the first fight on the pay-per-view segment of the Canelo Alvarez-Caleb Plant undercard. This victory marked Rodriguez's debut with Al Haymon's Premier Boxing Champions, following his release from Top Rank after a majority-decision defeat to Kenneth Sims Jr. in May.

The 31-year-old Romero, a 2016 Olympian, saw his record fall to 14-1 (9 KOs) after recovering from a fourth-round knockdown. Despite making the fifth round competitive, Rodriguez delivered a decisive blow that left Romero unable to continue before the round concluded.

In the fourth round, with under 1:50 remaining, Rodriguez landed a series of blows to Romero's body, including a right uppercut. A combination of left and right punches sent Romero to the canvas about 50 seconds before the round ended. Although Romero managed to beat the referee's count and launched hard shots at Rodriguez, the tide had shifted in Rodriguez's favor.

Romero dominated the early part of the third round with constant pressure, showcasing superior accuracy and activity. Despite Rodriguez attempting to stand his ground, Romero landed a significant right hand early in the second round during an exchange. Additionally, he connected with a left-right combination later in the second round, prompting Rodriguez to reset his feet.

The first round witnessed a fierce exchange of hard punches between Rodriguez and Romero when Rodriguez found himself backed into a neutral corner.
