Wilmatte Porter Cockerell and her husband Theodore traveled the world collecting and documenting hundreds of insect species. But a remarkable find in 1910, as she walked along the streets of her new home in Boulder, Colo., gave gardeners the remarkable gift of red sunflowers, all of which are believed to have descended from Cockerell's breeding world of this dazzling sunflower mutation.
