Anyone can get a horse to follow them or lock on to them in a round pen or enclosed area. You should be able to do this with your horse in an open area as well. If you visit your horse in the pasture, you should practice getting your horse to come to you and follow you. You cannot do this if you are always tugging and pulling your horse around on a lead rope. If you never let your be free then when he gets free he will not understand that it is OK to be free and still listen to you and follow you.

I am asked a lot why I get off my horse and walk before I get finished a ride. There are many reasons for this. It lets me stretch my legs, lets my horse get a relaxed walk back, it allows me to loosen the cinch, it teaches my horse not to rush back to barn or unsaddle location, It allows me and my horse to spend time walking together after a good ride.

On the first few times, after you know you can get your horse to follow you in open areas, you may want to do only a few steps and then each time get off a further out. This will also come in handy if your horse ever gets loose or if you ever fall off the horse by accident.

I think this is good for the horse and improves the relationship with the horse. Lots of benefits to this. Unfortunately too many people don't put in the time to trust their horse and to work on this, so they are always to worried about their horse running off. If your horse runs off then your horse is telling you, you went too fast, you did not do it right, you did prepare properly and you messed up, NOT the horse.
