Abner Doubleday’s served in the United States Army for more than 30 years. He graduated from the military academy in 1842 and retired in 1873. His service includes time at Fort Sumter, command in Virginia, and the Battle of Gettysburg. When his corps commander, Maj. Gen. John F. Reynolds, was killed on the morning of July 1, 1863, Doubleday took the lead. While he’s still incorrectly associated with the invention of baseball, it’s his service during the Civil War that earned him his spot at Arlington National Cemetery. (U.S. Army video by Daryl Vaca)
