The church dedicated to Saints Egidio and Omobono was built in the centre of Cremona (Italy) in the 10th century. After its extension, it was completely rebuilt in Baroque style in the 18th century. The beautiful brick bell tower has four bells. In 1729, three bells were cast in Milan, to flank the 1400 antique bell, which is the only one to have survived from the Middle Ages. One of the concert bells was requisitioned during the Second World War and paid for by the state as war damage in 1948. The original bells are in A major.

One very rainy day we went to the beautiful town, where we knew of the existence of a medieval bell. The kind custodian showed us the sights of the church, after which we climbed to the top of the monumental wooden staircase to ring the four bells, which still have their strings reaching to the base of the tower. One of the bells is rung softly because it has a broken handle.

Omobono Tucenghi, one of the best saints in the history of the Church, died in this church. A model citizen, a true Christian and helper of the poor, he died during the singing of the Gloria and was buried in the concept of sanctity. After less than a year and a half he was canonised and showered with honours, including the naming of the church in his honour. The church houses sculptures by the best artist of the 13th century, many paintings and one of the most beautiful vaults in the whole world, artistic perfection attainable only by those who believe in Christ. The church was painted entirely in 1755 by two artistic geniuses. Behind the fantastic altar is a perfectly preserved medieval fresco of the Virgin Mary.
