Johnathan Ruffer describes The Auckland Project as a journey akin to the Imperial Chinese examination's singular challenge: “Write all you know.” Over fifteen years, Ruffer has navigated a whirlwind of activity that began with a call to regenerate Bishop Auckland. Guided by a sense of purpose, he and his wife recognized the potential of a community long deprived of opportunity. Their mission focused on revitalizing the historic Palace, once home to the Bishops of Durham, which held invaluable Spanish Old Master paintings by Francisco de Zurbarán. By purchasing the artwork and transforming the Palace and its surroundings into a vibrant visitor attraction, they aimed to breathe life into the town.

At the heart of this endeavor is The Faith Museum, which explores how faith, belief, and religion have shaped lives across Britain. The museum’s narrative spans 6,000 years, guiding visitors through a rich tapestry of encounters with faith throughout history and into the present day. Featuring over 250 objects from 50 lenders across England, Scotland, and Wales, including national treasures and contemporary commissions, the museum opened in October 2023 in a newly designed wing of Auckland Palace. With support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Jerusalem Trust, and the Kirby Laing Foundation, the museum collaborates with local faith communities and academic advisors to create a respectful and engaging exploration of history and contemporary society, reflecting Ruffer's vision of cultural regeneration in Bishop Auckland.
