Welcome back to Racecars Universe and yet another sensational and thrilling Race Car special. After featuring that magnificent 1964 Fairlane 500 a few months ago, I decided it was time to dig further into the HVRA racing series.
The car that caught my attention this time is a 1968 Ford Escort Mk1 BDA/G, a name that's usually associated with lightweight, great handling and....Cosworth!
The historical significance of this vehicle is plentiful, starting from its first competition back in 1969 and originally built by the Halliday Brothers Racing. It is believed to be the most widely competed and successful saloon car in NZ racing history. Winning championships and races left and right, it also changed owners and at some stage it even received a V8 engine!!
The current setup is a 2Litre Cosworth BDG engine with forged pistons, dry sump system, twin 50mm Weber carburetors, that stunning strut brace bar, ZF close ratio gear box and Atlas diff, AP racing brakes all around.
With a top speed roughly 245kmh or 150mph and rev limiter to 9000rpm, she's a real screamer!
The front suspension is a custom Halliday creation along with the watts linkage mounting.
The car was completely stripped 4 years ago and has gone through a full bare metal restoration and finished in this vibrant red with the period correct and iconic NZ Freighters racing livery.

A huge thanks goes to Dennis McConnell for allowing us to take part in his racing sessions and to witness such an iconic Race Car in its natural habitat, the racetrack!
