In the Pandemic:

●Nationally, financial losses to nonprofit arts and culture organizations are an estimated
$15.7 billion, to date (April 2021). 99% of producing and presenting organizations have cancelled
events—a loss of 490 million admissions and $15.5 billion in audience spending at local
businesses (e.g., restaurants, lodging, retail, parking).

●The total economic impact of
organizational and audience-spending losses is $5.3 billion in lost government revenue
and 913,000 jobs no longer being supported. (Americans for the Arts)

● Of the 50 states, in terms of absolute losses for creative industries and
occupations, Texas is third, following California and New York. (Americans for the
Arts)

●Artists/creatives are among the most severely affected workers by the pandemic.

● 63% became fully unemployed in 2020 and have lost an average of $37,430 each in
creativity-based income since the pandemic’s onset. Jobs losses at nonprofit arts
organizations are nearly 5 times the average for all nonprofits (34.7% vs. 7.4%)
(Americans for the Arts)

●48% laid off or furloughed staff. While 90% of those expect to return to pre-pandemic
employment levels, 52% estimate that it will take until 2022 or beyond.

● 59% of organizations with in-person programming remain closed. Of those, one-third
expect to reopen in 2021, while the remaining two-thirds have no target date to
re-open.

● 69% make their artistic product available online or through social media, yet just 19% of
those generate enough revenue from virtual programing to cover the costs.

● The Small Business Association reports Arts & Entertainment businesses are the ones
most likely to take longer than 6 months to recover from the pandemic—and least likely
to have already returned to normal.

● Black, Indigenous, artists of color (BIPOC) had higher rates of
unemployment than white artists in 2020 due to the pandemic
(69% vs. 60%) and lost a larger percentage of their creative income
(61% vs. 56%).

● The State of Texas is estimated to see a reduction in their revenues of $1,186,186, and
revenues to the federal government from the decline in arts-related economic activity in
Bexar County is estimated to be $4,427,073.
