Jaylen Nowell poured in 28 points, including four quick points midway through the fourth quarter, as the Bulldogs (18-3) took control late. Nowell scored on a jumper and then stole an inbounds pass for a layin in a seven-second span as Garfield turned a 64-63 deficit into a 67-64 lead.
Rainier Beach (17-5), who got 23 points from Kevin Porter Jr., led by as many as nine points in the third quarter. The Vikings pulled within 69-68 on two free throws by Tijohn Rodde with 2:16 to go and then 72-70 on two free throws from Porter Jr. with 36.1 seconds left.
Eddie Turner hit two foul shots with 17.3 seconds showing on the clock for a 74-70 cushion. Then, on Beach’s final possession, Daejon Davis stole the ball for the Bulldogs and J’Raan Brooks finished with a tip-in at the other end with three seconds left.
