Around Iceland in 7 days. Film by Danny Rest.

I shot this film during a road trip I did back in August of 2020. We completed the entirety of the ring road around Iceland visiting almost all of the most beautiful locations in the country. In this film I marked all of the locations with coordinates o feel free to look them up and I hope it helps you if you are planning a trip to Iceland.

Day 1
Our trip started at one of the biggest and most spectacular waterfalls in Europe - Gullfoss. After sunrise we headed to another beautiful waterfall - Haifoss. While not being as large as Gullfoss, Háifoss is still one of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland, mainly for its height and thin water flow. After that we went to our sunset location, which is one of the lesser famous locations in Iceland - Sigöldugljúfur canyon. Its main attraction is the numerous number of waterfalls flowing along its sides.

Day 2
The next day was one of the most exciting ones in the whole road trip. After exploring several locations inland it was time to head south towards the coastal town Vik. In order to get there we needed to drive through one of the most spectacular and fun roads in Iceland - F208. It’s a road full of river crossings, hill climbs and many other off-road challenges. We arrived at Vik by midday which meant we still had some time to explore some of the most popular locations in the country.

Day 3
Third day of our trip started from a morning at the most photographed waterfalls in Iceland - the great Skogafoss. After sunrise we headed on another off-road journey to Stakkholtsgjá canyon. This location really surprised me, even though it’s located close to the most touristy locations in Iceland, it is still quite a hidden locations that not many people go to. The canyon is absolutely stunning, with a stream, flowing through the middle of it, huge rocks and many turns and twists - it quickly became one of my favourite places in Iceland. After exploring the canyon for a bit we started our journey back south to spend the sunset at, in my opinion, the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland - Seljalansfoss.

Day 4
Fourth day of our road trip around Iceland started at Svínafellsjökull - a huge glacier. I love visiting places like this because they remind of just how powerful nature is. The glacier is absolutely gigantic, and that was only a tiny part that we could see with our own eyes. Next we visited yet another canyon - Fjaðrárgljúfur. There were many cool viewpoints from which you could see down into the canyon. While not being as big as some other canyons we saw on the way, this place really impressed me with its sharp rocks and narrow bends. After visiting a couple of nice villages on the way, we finally arrived to out sunset location and by far my favourite place in Iceland - Stokksness. A black beach with tall mountains in the background, whenever I visit this place I get a wonderful feeling of peace and serenity. The day ended with a long night drive up north where more adventures awaited.

Day 5
Day 5 began with a sunrise at Goðafoss - another famous waterfall that reminds of the Niagara Falls just much smaller. After that we arrived at a small northern town Husavik where we got on a boat and sailed off to find…. Whales! And we did! What we saw was quite unique and we were told by the guides that this is the first time that has ever happened - we saw 2 families of whales who for some reason were really close to each other. That meant that we could see 5-6 whales swimming next to each other at the same time. It was quite an experience. Seeing these massive whales slowly swim along the boat then twisting their tale and going under water. It was something I have never seen before!

Day 6
Now heading west we visited several amazing locations along the coast, the main one being the famous Kirkjufell mountain. As well as that we got a chance to closely see Icelandic horses who are known for being very friendly and playful. We spent our sunset at Hvitserkur - a huge rock standing in the ocean away from land. The shape of Hvitserkur rocks reminds people of many things - an elephant, gorilla, rhino and many more.

Day 7
Kerlingarfjöll. Iceland is known to be home to many unique out-of-this-world locations, but Kerlingarfjöll is like nothing else. When you walk on these colourful mountains. You don’t feel like you’re on planet Earth. You can’t believe that a place like this exists. But it does. All these unique, incredible places exist in a country called ICELAND!
