Country 59 - Kazakhstan 🇰🇿

We are Ash and Dan and we're on a mission to visit 100 countries!

Join us today as we walk around the city of Karaganda (Karagandy or Qaraghandy) in Kazakhstan. After visiting the Karlag museum in the town of Dolinka in our last vlog, we spend today walking around the main city of this region.

Karaganda was originally built as a coal mining hub. In the 1930s, during the Soviet era, the discovery of coal deposits in the region spurred the development of the city. It quickly became one of the largest industrial centres in Kazakhstan, with coal mining as its main income source.

In addition to mining, Karaganda became associated with labor camps (the Karlag) during the soviet era. Many political prisoners and forced labourers were sent to the region to work in harsh conditions, contributing significantly to the city's industrial growth.

There are many monuments, mosaics and memorials around the city remembering the hard times Kazakhstan faced during the soviet times.
