In 1761, on Makar Sankrant, The Maratha and Afghan armies clashed in the Third battle of Panipat. The result of this Panipat war was a defeat of the Maratha forces.
Afghan chief Ahmed shah Abdali’s invasions of Delhi led to calls for a Maratha action on the Afghan troops. The Marathas under the stewardship of Sadashivraobhau ventured in the Northern plains of India to counter the Afghan invasion. Third Battle of Panipat (1761) ended in Maratha defeat due to the supposed death of Sadashivrao Bhau.

१७६१ मध्ये मकर संक्रांतला पानिपतच्या तिसऱ्या युद्धात मराठा आणि अफगाण सैन्यात युद्ध झाल. या पानिपत युद्धाचा परिणाम म्हणजे मराठा सैन्याचा पराभव.

अफगाण प्रमुख अहमद शाह अब्दालीच्या दिल्लीवरील हल्ल्यांमुळे अफगाण सैन्यावर मराठा कारवाईचे आवाहन करण्यात आले. सदाशिवरावभाऊंच्या नेतृत्वाखालील मराठ्यांनी अफगाण आक्रमणाचा मुकाबला करण्यासाठी भारताच्या उत्तरेकडील मैदानी भागात संक्रमण केले. पानिपतची तिसरी लढाई (1761) सदाशिवराव भाऊंच्या कथित मृत्यूमुळे मराठ्यांच्या पराभवात संपली.
