The US has accused an Indian government official of directing an unsuccessful plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist, also a US citizen, on US soil. Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have brought murder-for-hire charges against Indian national Nikhil Gupta. According to the indictment, $100,000 was promised “to murder the victim” and a payment of $15,000 in cash was made in advance. The US says President Biden himself raised the New York plot directly with PM Modi when they met at the G20 summit in September. But who is Nikhil Gupta and who was the target?
