Spider-Man: No Way Home opens with an end credits sequence, upping the ante instantly by unmasking Peter Parker (Tom Holland). Exposed to public opinion and forced to make others forget, this threequel then goes on to unpack his cinematic legacy and introduce a volatile multiverse.

A master stroke that echoes the invention of Avengers: Endgame and allows Tom Holland to step up, aided by his brothers in Sony-sized spandex, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. Unfortunately, with three times the responsibility comes a whole host of villainy. Cue the arrival of five fearsome foes who follow them through with unfinished business.

With a roll call of acting royalty including Willem Dafoe (Norman Osbourn), Alfred Molina (Doctor Otto Octavius) and Jamie Foxx (Max Dillon) on screen, Marvel had every intention of making another landmark movie. That this marks the moment Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) makes his first appearance on MCU soil is also important, because it’s a crossover fans never thought would happen. After the cancelation of Daredevil on Netflix, which featured some of the best casting in superhero history, this moment is almost worth the admission price on its own. However, Spider-Man: No Way Home never made it to a billion-dollar box office off the back of one cameo, so the question is what else can get audiences back into cinemas this May?
