Jamaican cherry, also known as Muntingia calabura or gasagase gida, is a fast-growing tree native to Mexico that is grown in Indian cities for shade and as a road lining tree. It can reach heights of 12–15 ft and spreads its branches like an umbrella. The Jamaican cherry is drought-resistant but not salt-tolerant, and can thrive in poor soil. It has evergreen leaves that grow alternatively, long and pointed at the top, and oblique at the bottom.
