To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day. Hardly spoke to folks around him, didn't have too much to say. No one dared to ask his business, no one dared to make a slip. The stranger there among them tried to Beat Fallout New Vegas With Only A Big Iron On His Hip.

Can You Beat Fallout New Vegas With Only A Big Iron On Your Hip? (in text form)

The title is kinda clickbait, kinda not. The general idea here is that I can only use the .357 Magnum and I can’t look down the sights, I can only fire from the hip. My only method of attack is the big iron on my hip. The “not looking down the sights” thing might be a bit much, but a little extra pain never hurt anyone so I’m doing it anyway.

Because I’m not using Speech as a crutch, the build for this challenge is pretty average for a gun-heavy character. I drained Charisma because it’s worthless and the 357 Magnum only requires a Strength of 3 to use, so I dropped it to 4 and raised all other stats to 7 to have a somewhat well-rounded character. My skills were probably obvious: Guns, Lockpick, and Repair. I went with Trigger Discipline as my first trait. It gives a 20% boost to accuracy which will be useful since I can only fire from the hip, and Skilled to again boost all skills a bit. I stole everything I could carry from Doc Mitchell’s house and left to head to Chet’s shop to buy my gun. He didn’t have one, because why would he. So I sold my trash, bought some stimpaks and ammo, and left. Luckily, there is a Magnum in the Prospector Saloon behind the counter.

It didn’t belong to me, technically I shouldn’t have taken it, but the “did not” and “should not” in this sentence cancel each other out which makes taking it okay. I shot the bottles behind the bar to get a new gun and some ammo to sell later on, and decided to see how bad this situation is by picking a target and annihilating them. Ignoring the shots I missed, it took an unfathomable amount of shots to end Joe Cobb, because I failed in the process. I tried again and noticed something really annoying. Revolvers must be reloaded manually, New Vegas doesn’t have the $4.99 per month “auto-reload” DLC yet. Sometimes taking damage will interrupt what you’re doing. Bullets have to be loaded in one at a time, which means you’ve got 6 opportunities to be interrupted every time you reload. It’s a real problem that occurs frequently throughout this run.

It took something like 16 shots to end Cobb, leaving town with 2 bullets, one for an enemy and one for me when I miss, is a recipe for disaster. So I did a time jump and went back to when Cobb didn’t have a dozen bullets in him, spoke to him about taking over the town, and realized that because I spoke to him, I didn’t have the option of helping Ringo take out the Powder Gangers. Ringo forfeited his life when he dared to speak to me in such a way.

Cobb told me to shake down the citizens of townsville for everything they had. I started with Chet, failed, and I slowly walked into town while wishing that my mustache was bigger. I helped with the fight the same way a kid who tastes the cookie batter helps with baking cookies. I was there, I did stuff, but nothing would’ve turned out differently if I was a puddle of failure body in the bone orchard.
