Learn what hypertufa is, what is is made of, and what it used for. Hypertufa is a type of lightweight concrete that is made from a mixture of portland cement, perlite, peat moss and water. It is made to have similar properties of tufa - a type of lightweight, porous limestone, sometimes known as travertine.

As with most lightweight concretes, hypertufa is not very strong. It is typically used for decorative concrete applications and is most popular for plant pots and planter boxes. The porous nature of hypertufa is especially useful for planters allowing for easier water drainage.

If you want to make something out of hypertufa but you want it to be stronger, you could add sand to the initial mixture. Sand will increase the strength along with increasing the weight of the finished product. Adding fibers to the hypertufa mix will also increase the overall strength but not add too much weight.

Hypertufa can be a fun and affordable medium to work with. It is easy to make with materials that are readily available in most areas.
