This presentation begins by placing authentic learning on the list of benefits of creativity. It draws from Piaget's To Understand is to Invent and my own chapter, "To Understand is to Create," the key idea being that all understanding is constructed. There is a brief review of the underlying processes and exploration of other evidence, aside from genetic epistemology, for the importance of creativity in learning. The conclusion offered is that authentic learning is the most broadly applicable expression of creativity and therefore arguably the most important kind of creativity. It not only plays a role in everyday creative acts (which do not take place in a formal domain) but also represents a universal, which means that it plays a role in all domains of creative performance. This presentation will (a) explore exactly how creativity supports authentic learning and (b) contrast it with the rote learning that is too often accepted in educational settings.
