In this short meditation, Dr. Rachel Davies introduces the great Carmelite mystic Teresa of Ávila and her image of the soul as a garden.

Teresa lived between 1515-1582 in Ávila, Castile (central Spain), from where she led the Carmelite reform together with mystic and poet Juan de la Cruz (John of the Cross).

Teresa was a woman of tremendous energy, a visionary leader who founded almost twenty convents, providing spiritual care to her nuns and penning such enduring spiritual classics as The Way of Perfection and The Interior Castle-- all while facing pressure from the Spanish Inquisition. Her wisdom continues to guide those who seek deeper connection with themselves, others, and the Mystery who holds things in being.

Rachel Davies is a research fellow in spirituality and theology at the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne, Australia.

Paul Hawker, video producer, is a lay Franciscan living in Sydney, Australia.

Parts of this video were filmed on Worimi and on Gadigal Country.
