Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant, commanding the Union District of Cairo, embarks on an expedition into northern Tennessee with Union Navy Flag Officer Andrew Hull Foote to capture two strategically-important Confederate forts positioned along the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers: Fort Henry (Tennessee) and Fort Donelson (Cumberland). Their first target is the half-sunken Fort Henry.
