Join Garry W. K. Ho, MD, FACSM, FAMSSM, FAAFP, CAQSM, RMSK, CIC to learn about myofascial pain syndrome! This pain is caused by trigger points, along the muscle, similar to a muscle spasm. Unlike a cramp or spasm, this pain derives from individual strands of the muscle that form knots and in this case, are known as trigger points.

Sometimes mistaken for nerve issues, myofascial pain syndrome can happen anywhere in the body and can be painful.

Some nonprocedural treatments include stretching, massage and medications. From a nonpharmacologic approach, there are many modalities such as acupuncture, acupressure, ultrasound, laser therapy, dry needling and massage. If you are experiencing trigger point pain, you can utilize a sports ball, such as a tennis ball or a lacrosse ball, at home to relieve discomfort over time. You can begin by leaning against a wall or lying on the floor to apply pressure for 15 or 20 minutes every other day. This pain is amendable but requires a bit of time on the patient's part.

In addition to the nonoperational treatments, OrthoVirginia's specialists can provide trigger point injection therapy and more. Schedule an appointment to learn more!
