In this episode of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Ajatashatru, a significant figure in ancient Indian history, particularly known for his role as a king of the Haryanka dynasty of Magadha. He was the son of King Bimbisara and is recognized for his contemporary status with two major spiritual figures: Mahavira and Gautama Buddha.
Ajatashatru’s ascension to the throne was marked by his forceful takeover of the kingdom from his father, whom he imprisoned. His rule was characterized by aggressive policies of conquest and expansion. He waged a war against the Vajjika League, led by the Licchavis, and successfully conquered the republic of Vaishali. Under his leadership, the city of Pataliputra was fortified, which later became a prominent historical and political center.
His military campaigns extended beyond Magadha, as he defeated neighboring rivals, including the king of Kosala. Ajatashatru’s annexation of Kashi, which had been part of his father’s dowry, led to a conflict with Kosala. Ultimately, his conquests significantly expanded the Magadhan empire, making it the most powerful kingdom in North India during his time.
