WHAT IS A GENERATOR, HOW IT WORKS AND ITS HISTORY

The history of the generators used today goes back to 1831. A very simple apparatus created by the British scientist, physicist and chemist Michael Faraday is the first example of today's generator.

The first generator was made using a tube made of neutral material, a coil of wire, a bar magnet and cotton.

Faraday connected this device to a galvanometer used to detect electric current.

When he moved the magnet back and forth along the wire coil, he noticed that even if the wire coil remained stationary, the galvanometer's needle kept moving. This was an indication that an electric current was present in the coil of wire.

He later installed the Faraday disc, which is considered the first electromagnetic generator. A magnet that looks like a horseshoe had a copper disk rotating between its poles, and it produced direct current (DC) with it. Other scientists carried Faraday's discovery to an advanced level and led to the emergence of today's generator technology.
