The most of woods you use are sawn badly! So they break or twist easily, or tend to grain rising, or tear out when you plane it with jointer or hand planes.
I am explaining how to recognize if a wood block is true cutted or has grain run out.
For #musicalinstruments neck, it is necessary to use true cut blocks, to avoid deformation of neck that makes it un-usable!
Some violin makers assume a good violin neck is a curly block,
Some #guitarmaker s assume a good guitar neck a light weight board,
Some setar makers and tar maker s assume a good neck a black attractive walnut,
Sometimes if a technical investigation must be done, only they look at how much the grain is straight,
But a true cutted instrument neck is much more complicated…
