The cation test is a test to determine the cation present in a sample solution. The cation test is carried out as part of quantitative analysis in identifying the ions present in a solution. Cation test starts with the use of sodium hydroxide solution and ammonia solution. Different cations react to produce different observations that can be used to identify the specific cation present in the solution.
