All good things in music should be started by remembering one’s Guru. So I start this channel by remembering my Ustad from Agra Gharana
Ustad Naseem Ahmed Khan was trained by his father Ustad Bashir Ahmed Khan at Agra and by his father in law, Ustad Ata Hussain Khan at Kolkata. He presented bandishes with great musicality and clear diction. He had amazing teaching skills. I had the good fortune to get taleem from him for a year and further guidance for a couple of years. He would hold the hands of his shagirds and take them through raag, nayaki, gayaki and other facets of classical singing by following the simplest path, with an uncanny knack of transferring the maximum to his students. I was a fortunate beneficiary. His son Ustad Waseem Ahmed is doing ‘baap, dada, nana ka naam raushan’ and upholding the traditions of the gharana.
This is a live recording sometime in late 1994. Ustadji sings along with a very young Waseem, about 22 years old. The Raag is Purvi, a signature melody of Agra Gharana with two very traditional bandishes Naiya mori paar karo tum and Piya Navelra Paya.
